A Lesson In Whitework Embroidery

By Claudia Newton

Whitework is a broad category that includes any white embroidery worked on white fabric, but we more commonly associate the term with specific stitches – eyelets, granitos, and padded satin stitch are some of the most recognized. A good foundation in these and a few other simple stitches will have even beginner students producing heirloom-quality work with the classic look found so often in antique embroideries. Many fabrics are suitable for whitework, but some of the easiest to learn on are good quality linens or cottons such as Swiss batiste.
