Embellishing Baby KnitsI machine stitched the shadow work designs onto the front of each onesie, following the step-by-step PDF file that is included with the design set, but rather than select one thread color for stitches that would appear on the right and wrong sides, I used a darker shade of thread for the under-stitching on the wrong side (herringbone-type stitch) and a lighter shade of thread for the outline stitching on the right side. The resulting effect was a shadow of pale color that could be seen through the baby knit fabric, making the design appear to have been stitched by hand.

Baby knit blanks are Gerber® Onesies. Patterns for matinee jackets and diaper covers are from the vintage-inspired Baby Beatrix Layette for Boys & Girls by Southern Stitches, and include shadow work embroidery designs and step-by-step instructions.
