Spring is a beautiful time of year when everything seems to come to life, inspiring pretty sewing projects that befit the season. I’m so excited to announce our Spring 2018 Issue is officially out on newsstands!
Every spring meant Easter at our home when I was growing up. What a day in the Burnses’ household! We began the day at the sunrise service on a hill near our church. Because I was the only girl in the family, Mom took time to help me select a special Easter dress to mark the day. I had the requisite patent leather shoes—either black or white—white socks trimmed in lace, and little white gloves. Then following sunrise service, my dad cooked breakfast at the church for everyone in attendance. His specialty was biscuits and gravy. It was always a challenge to gobble up those biscuits while keeping my dress clean! Mom had on her beautiful outfit, complete with hat and gloves. She was stunning. It’s amazing she had enough energy to get dressed up after cooking all day on Saturday.
Sunday meant Easter dinner complete with ham, deviled eggs, green beans, and potato salad. When we were older, she added a coconut cake topped with jelly beans as a special treat. Following lunch, Dad would hide the eggs, and then my two brothers and I would have the hunt—still dressed up in our church clothes. When we found an egg, we would hold it up and Dad would take a photo of us! He must have taken hundreds of photos over the years of us holding up our prized eggs.
I hope you have special moments that you recall from your childhood. My children and grandchildren celebrate our holidays at the McMakin home. It’s always a holy day for us and a time of family. As you plan outfits to sew for your special children, you are creating beautiful memories for them, too. We dedicate this issue of Classic Sewing in memory of Nancy Zieman, who was passionate about sharing her love of sewing. What a beautiful legacy of love and inspiration she leaves with all of us.
Thank you for making our spring special by loving us and the designers, photographers, artists, and stylists that pour their hearts into each issue. It all starts with the love that binds all sewists together.
Happy Spring Sewing!
