Sewing Room

A light, bright quilting theme makes this sewing room a happy place.

Patti Cappell designed her sewing room with treasures that exemplify all of her artistic pastimes. Using white as her base color, she added pops of color here and there, reflecting her happy personality. Here, a quilted window shade in white and pastels, knitting utensils, embroidery stitching, and beautifully hand-sewn children’s garments set the tone. An old easel serves as a bulletin board in the corner. Pottery pieces, Waldorf dolls, watercolors—all created by Patti—surround a wonderful marble-topped work table and a Viking sewing machine that are the centerpiece of her light, airy sewing room.

“My sewing room started with my art tables, acquired when I was in my watercolor phase,” Patti explains. She also has tall workbenches with tons of drawers because she likes to work standing up. “Then, I added anything that would hold ‘stuff,’ but it needed to be fun—a bit quirky.”

Patti used an antique basket to store her rolls of interfacings and magazines. It lives under her workbench for easy access.
